Çerkes Şefi Duğuj, hala bu şehirde; fakat soydaşlarının son başarıları ile ilgili haberler üzerine, kendi dağlarına dönmeyi şiddetle arzu etmektedir. Kendisi sık sık Hristiyan ahbaplarını ziyaret eder, ve oldukça keyif aldığı bu ahbaplarının masalarında, seyrek bulunan bir konuk değildir, bir bardak sek brendiye düşkündür, iyi likörün sulandırılmasını son derece ahmakça olarak değerlendirir . Abın kalesine taarruz sırasında, cesur bir şövalye gibi, bir Rus generalinin beyaz tenli ve güzel kızını, kendi ikametine kaçırmış, ona son derece nezaketli ve itina ile davranmış, kendisine hizmet sunmak üzere güzelce bir Çerkes kızı görevlendirmiştir.

 

 

Yakını kaçırılmış genç kızın ailesi, kızlarını geri alabilmek için müzakere etmek üzere bir ulak göndermiş, ve kız onu kaçıran kişi tarafından yaklaşık 1.000 sterlin değerinde mal ve para olarak sunulan fidye mukabilinde sağ salim olarak serbest bırakılmıştır. Böylelikle Duğuj’un cüzdanı bir hayli para ile dolmuş ve onu İstanbul’un güzel atmosferine taşımaya yetmiştir.

 

Daha sonra kendisi Ruslar tarafından esir alınmış, fakat General Rajevski kendisine  hüsnü muamele göstererek onu, herhangi bir değiş tokuş ya da fidye talep etmeksizin serbest bırakmıştır. Fakat kendi kabına sığmayan bu Çerkes, evine döndüğü vakit, soydaşları tarafından esir edilmiş olan, üst düzey bir Rus görevlisini derhal serbest bırakarak General’e göndermiştir. Çerkes elçisi Sefer Bey, son dönemlere kadar, hala sefalet içinde yaşamakta olduğu Edirne’de kalmaya devam etmektedir. Bab-ı Ali kendisine aylık üç bin kuruş maaş bağlamıştır.

THE CIRCASSIAN AT CONSTANTINOPLE

 

Tougouz, the Circassian chieftain, is still in this city ; but on hearing the news of the late successes of his countrymen, he ardently longs to return to his native mountains. He often visits his Christian acquaintances, and is not an unfrequent guest at their tables, which he finds very much to his taste,—indulging in frequent rasades of pure brandy, for he considers it exceedingly silly to dilute the good liquor with Water. At the attack on the fort of Abuna, he succeeded n carrying off, on the pommel of his saddle, like a peens; chevalier, a fair young lady, the daughter of a Russian general, whom he carried to his habitation, and treated with the utmost delicacy and attention, appointing fair Circassian maidens to wait upon her.

 

The bereaved parent immediately set on foot a negotiation for the recovery of his daughter, and she was restored by the captor, safe and sound, on the payment of a ransom amounting, in money and goods, to nearly 1,0001. sterling. Thus the purse of Tougouz is pretty well lined, and enables him to carry on the war with tolerable spirit at Constantinople. He was subsequently taken prisoner himself by the Russians, but General Rajewsky, after showing him much kindness, gave him his liberty, without ransom or exchange. The high-spirited Circassian, however, on his return home, immediately freed, and sent to the general a Russian officer of rank, who had been made a prisoner by his countrymen. Safer Bey, the Circassian envoy, still remains at Adrianople, where he lived very miserably unt41 lately. The Porte has granted him a pension of three thousand piastees per month.—Constantinople correspondent of the Chronicle.
